Who can edit a team's squad
Captains, vice-captains and team admins manage a squad. Learn who can add players, set roles and share the invite link, and how to share the work.
On this page
A team's squad is public, but not everyone can change it. A parent who opens their child's house team sees the players and their roles, but none of the edit buttons. This page explains who can manage a squad, how to make someone a team admin, and what to do if you see a squad you can't edit.
Who can manage a squad
A squad can be managed by:
- the person who created the team
- the captain and the vice-captain
- any team admin (a team can have several)
- for a team that belongs to a club, that club's admins
- for a team that belongs to a school or other organisation, its Owner, Admins and Organizers
Managing a squad means you can add and remove players, make someone captain, vice-captain or admin, set squad roles, edit the team's name and logo, and share the squad's invite link.
Everyone else sees the squad read-only, with the note "Only the captain, vice-captain or team admins can edit this squad."
Step by step: open a squad
- Open the team (from a match, a tournament's Teams tab, or search).
- Tap 👥 Squad · + Add. If you can't manage the team, the button just reads 👥 Squad.
- Managers see + Add more players at the top, with buttons under each player.
Step by step: make someone captain, vice-captain or admin
- Open the squad.
- Under the player's name, tap Make captain, Make vice-captain or Make admin.
- If the team already has a captain, you're asked "Change captain?". Tap Make captain to confirm. The old captain loses the role.
- Tap the same button again (now ★ Captain, ★ Vice-captain or ★ Admin) to take the role away.
Rules worth knowing:
- One person can't be both captain and vice-captain. Picking one clears the other.
- Captain and admin can go together. A captain can also be an admin.
- A team can have only one captain and one vice-captain, but any number of admins.
- For club teams, admins are set on the club page, not in the squad. The squad shows "Admins are set on the club page ›".
Step by step: set squad roles
For cricket, football, basketball, volleyball and kabaddi, managers see role chips under each player. Examples are Wicketkeeper, Batter and Bowler for cricket, or Goalkeeper and Forward for football.
- Open the squad.
- Tap a role chip to turn it on, and tap it again to turn it off. A player can hold more than one role.
Viewers see the roles as text next to the player's name.
Stepping down
If you remove your own captaincy, vice-captaincy or admin role, you're asked to confirm: "You'll stop managing this team unless you're also an admin." Once you confirm, the edit buttons disappear for you. Make sure someone else is still a captain or admin first.
Common questions
I tapped "Make captain" and it went back. Why?
The server checked and found you're not allowed to change this team. The squad goes back to how it was and a message explains why. This can happen if someone removed your role a moment ago. Go back, open the squad again, and ask the captain if you still can't edit it.
Where is the squad's invite link?
At the bottom of the squad, managers see 📨 Invite the captain / coach with Generate invite link. The person you send it to enters the code under Settings → Join a team with a code, and becomes able to manage the squad.
Can I fix a player's name or shirt number?
Yes, for players who haven't joined the app themselves. See Fix a player's details.
Who can add the team logo?
Any squad manager, from ✎ Edit team. See Add a player photo, team logo or tournament banner.
