At a school final, two teachers may both be allowed to score. If both tap the same goal, the score goes wrong. So SportnNote lets several people be scorers, but only one phone scores at any moment. Everyone else watches live. When the scoring phone's battery dies, another scorer takes over in two taps.

Before you start

  • You must be one of the match's scorers, or a host of the match or its tournament. Hosts can score without being added as a scorer. Other scorers are added on the match's Info tab under Match scorers. See Scorers and officials.
  • The lock only applies while a match is about to start or is live. Once the match ends, it's released.

How you get the lock

You don't need to do anything. When you open the Scoring tab and nobody else is scoring, your phone quietly becomes the scoring phone. The first person to open the match and start scoring holds the lock.

On the Info tab, the Match scorers card shows everyone allowed to score. The person scoring right now has a SCORING NOW tag. Your own row says "📱 Scoring from this device".

When someone else is scoring

If another scorer holds the lock, your Scoring tab shows a card instead of the scoring buttons. It reads, for example, "Priya is scoring right now (last update 2 min ago). One person scores at a time." You have two choices:

  • Watch live opens the score view so you can follow along.
  • Take over scoring moves scoring to your phone.

Your phone checks who holds the lock about every 15 seconds while the Scoring tab is open.

Step by step: take over scoring

Use this when the scoring phone has died, lost signal, or the scorer has left.

  1. Open the match → Scoring tab.
  2. Tap Take over scoring.
  3. Read the message "Take over from Priya?" and tap Take over.
  4. The scoring buttons appear. Carry on from where the score stands.

Step by step: hand over to another scorer

Use this for a planned change, for example at half-time or between innings.

  1. Make sure the new scorer is listed under Match scorers on the Info tab and has joined SportnNote.
  2. On their row, tap Hand over. Only the person scoring now, or a host, sees this link.
  3. Confirm with Hand over. Your phone stops scoring at once.
  4. The new scorer gets an alert, "You're scoring now", and scores from their next tap.

If scoring moved away from your phone

If someone takes over from you, a banner at the top says "Scoring moved to Priya". Your scoring buttons are replaced by the "is scoring right now" card.

If your phone had taps that were still waiting to upload, the banner also says how many weren't saved. Tap Discard to throw them away. Those taps are never merged into the score, because merging could count the same goal or run twice. Tell the new scorer what you'd recorded so they can add it.

Common questions

What if the same person opens the match on two phones?

The second phone shows "You are scoring on another device". Tap Take over scoring on the phone you want to use.

On a computer, does each browser tab count separately?

Yes. Each browser tab counts as its own device, so two tabs can't both score. Use one tab.

Can the organiser take over?

Yes. Any listed scorer can take over, and so can any host of the match or its tournament. A host doesn't need to add themselves first: open the Scoring tab and tap Take over scoring. Once a host starts scoring, their name is added to Match scorers on the Info tab.

What happens when the match ends?

The lock is released. After full time, scorers and hosts can fix mistakes from the Info tab. See Correct a finished match.

Someone took over by mistake. How do I get it back?

Tap Take over scoring again on your phone, or ask them to tap Hand over on your row.
